Comedian

I AM WATCHING DUST DANCE in the red and blue lights when the velvet-suited emcee puts his hand on my left shoulder. He must be speaking to me because his mouth is moving. Despite his voice being a whisper, his face is moving violently; chin bobbing up and down above his tie, neck muscles volcanically tightened. He walks with loud steps onto the black vinyl stage, asking the audience whether they are ready. He announces my name in the exact same rising melody every single night, like a word repeated so often it’s just a sound now. I stand in the shadow of the wings just a little while longer. I feel my stomach getting cold. It’s not nerves. It’s just empty, hollow. I step out onto the stage. The firecracker sound of their clapping hurts my ears. I already wish they would stop. As I reach center stage, I feel the muscles on my face tighten to a smile. I chuckle into the microphone, and joke that I’m not close to being that funny. They are already entertained.

Stickers on the way!

Great news! ART/OFFICIAL is about to have a makeover. In the next two months or so you will see drastic changes in the website to give us that professional but like to party look. I would proudly like to display our new logo. I have uploaded it as the sticker form that is on the way to us now to put all over town, your laptops, etc. Below that is our second sticker for those who request one. It will be printed to look like a Polaroid photo, and thus can be written on in the white part on the bottom. I hope you like them!!

Paul Simon On Acid?

A truly unreal composition. Washington D.C. an Berlin based Benoit and Sergio have produced a track that has been described as "Paul Simon on acid making house music." I can see that... Be sure to check out the rest of the tracks from the upcoming EP and learn more about these guys on DFA's website by clicking here. Enjoy!

review: wild nothings

bandd

I love going to other places for shows, especially out of state. There is something about it that's refreshing. This past Monday a friend and I traveled to the college town of Oxford, MS to see Wild Nothing at Proud Larry's. It was a five and a half hour drive, which we deemed worth it. This was as close as they were playing, and we weren't going to miss it. In fact, the band has never performed in New Orleans, but aspire to do so in the future. Oxford locals Winter sport opened, with twisted punk act Abe Vigoda as well. Vigodas fast paced style and upbeat tropical blend are at times abrasive and at other times equally sun-drenched, paying homage to their LA/California hailing. On top of knowing how to play their instruments with precision, they make tunes that are structurally inconsistent, and it's fun to watch. They are currently on a short US tour through the states with Wild Nothing.

On top of being spectacular musicians, Wild Nothing are awfully nice guys. Playing to a full venue, the 45 minute set was a powerhouse of rhythmic melodies. They delivered many songs from the debut album Gemini, such as "Bored Games", the ethereal "Our Composition Book", and favorite " Live In Dreams" , in which Tatum repeats "Because our lips won't last forever, and that's exactly why I'd rather live in dreams and I'd rather die." That line resonates as a reminder of lost times, good and bad, and an anthem of reflection. They also played a few songs off the Golden Haze EP and a cover; each one flowing together nicely, as if making the next possible. The bar was small enough to get the personal feel I really enjoy in a live performance. With only a few EPs, and one full release under their belt , these Virginia natives show no sign or stopping or slowing down. It's all the brainchild of bedroom producer Jack Tatum, who since late 2009 has been cranking out dreamy pop soundscapes from his home in Blacksburg. The murky and sometimes distant feel of Wild Nothing are what make them so appealing to me. Every aspect, and member of the band, flow together to make the sound possible. I got to hang out and talk to the guys for a little while about the road, earlier tours, and current favorites. Jack Tatum took some time time to do an interview with me after the show:

a/o: I won't take too much of your time, I just want to ask a few questions

Tatum: Oh no, it's totally fine.

a/o: How long have you been creating music?

Tatum: I've been playing guitar since I was 11, but as far as making music, I started at 15.

a/o: How is the music scene in your hometown in Virginia?

Tatum: Well, there really isn't one, non-existent i'd have to say.

a/o: What is your favorite studio/place to record your music?

Tatum: Every recording i've done has been from my own house in Virginia.

a/o: So a question i'm always eager to get answered, what have you been listening to lately?

Tatum: Ah, new Cut Copy, new Destroyer(fuck yes!), and always classic favorite My Bloody Valentine.

a/o: What about something that people might not expect you to be jamming to?

Tatum: Haha, well I have been working on a remix to Will Smiths "Wild Wild West", so I guess that.

a/o: What is your personal favorite place to pass through, while touring or otherwise.

Tatum: Well Los Angeles of course is always a favorite, anywhere in California really.

a/o: Have you ever been to New Orleans?

Tatum: No, unfortunately I haven't.

a/o: Alright, so what's for the near future? Another album/more touring to support?

Tatum: Oh yeah, we have 4-5 songs finished and aim to start recording by summer, with touring to definitely follow.

a/o: Thanks Jack for your time, I really appreciate it.

Tatum: No Problem.

radiohead announce new album

tkolpackshot-2

apparently the worlds first "newspaper album" won't really be released until may 9th, but you can get the tracks this weekend if you preorder the album from it's own website, www.thekingoflimbs.com. it seems that radiohead always comes up with some creative way to make money off of their new music in these trying times of digital downloads. the album will consist of the following, as quoted from the site:

"Radiohead's new record, The King of Limbs, is presented here as the world's first* Newspaper Album, comprising:
  • Two clear 10" vinyl records in a purpose-built record sleeve.
  • A compact disc.
  • Many large sheets of artwork, 625 tiny pieces of artwork and a full-colour piece of oxo-degradeable plastic to hold it all together.
  • The Newspaper Album comes with a digital download that is compatible with all good digital media players.
  • The Newspaper Album will be shipped on Monday 9th May 2011 you can, however, enjoy the download on Saturday 19th February 2011.
  • Shipping is included in the prices shown.
  • One lucky owner of the digital version of The King of Limbs, purchased from this website, will receive a signed 2 track 12" vinyl."

oh to being single.

All of us at art/official suddenly have found ourselves single. Maybe its the time of year? Maybe our dashing good looks have begun to wear off? We were attempting to put together a video of ourselves talking about what we are looking for in a woman, but then I found this. It just hits the nail on the head too well not to use it. Personally I can relate with this guy.
  • "I'm not afraid to get sand on my tuxedo if your not afraid to let the wind mess up your hair a little bit when I take the top down."

Are you out there my messy haired lady? How I pine for your affection.

    Lots of love,

    Happy Valentine's Day!

    13 February 2011

    Aloha.

“Aloha!” our waitress matched the temperature in a brisk, tropical 6:00 morning breakfast. “Coffee for you two?”
“No I’m fine-- just my dad.” I replied thinking I was a man.
My dad added, “And could you bring some cream and sugar too, please?”
She neared a shout as she was already speeding towards the kitchen. “No problem, it’ll be right out!”
We stared into our respective sides of the table. The well-known long pause, so long it was not a pause, but a spell. My dad eventually broke it; I appreciated it immediately. I was the son of a crafty wizard.

This man is literally (and yes im using that word properly you insecure English majors) the greatest
