At this time those of us at art/official would like to appologize for the delay in some amazing original content that is long overdue. We have been working tirelessly since Foburg to compile the best articles, photos, and coverage from the event. We also hope to release our most anticipated spotlight yet this week before The Ethical Fashion Show!

We planned to release most of this content over the weekend, but a bit of drama unfolded which we had to take care of. I would try to explain, but I think I'll just let the video speak for itself...

Peter Murphy (of British Goth outfit Bauhaus) is coming to the Republic

Take it from us, Goth Music is semi-officially IN

I think this is sexy, and I am not ashamed to admit it.

Our friends at the Republic (for our non-local readers who don’t know, they’re the people who brought the internet this), are bringing in an act they’re pretty excited about: Peter Murphy of Bauhaus fame. Often called the “Godfather of Goth” (according to Wikipedia at least), Murphy is sure to put on an interesting, if not good, performance.


Republic had this to say about the show:

This would be the perfect event for a seasoned crowd that enjoys Murphy’s older hits like “The Sweetest Drop” and “Cuts You Up,” as well as his newer albums, which are more varied in genre; from haunting ballads to pseudo-pop, and also the aggressive alt-rock sound that was a trademark of his work with Bauhaus. 

Still considered a cult mainstay with American fans, Murphy issued the live double-disc Alive Just for Love in Summer 2001. This delightful set was released by Metropolis and featured Bauhaus tracks and solo hits. A year later, he hooked up with renowned world artist Mercan Dade for this sixth studio album, Dust. Unshattered followed in 2004.

[new] G-Eazy- Dear Ms. Rose

We recently released a spotlight on up and coming New Orleans Loyola student/hip hop star G-Eazy. Since the spotlight, he really seems to be making a lot of noise in New Orleans lately. On March 22nd G will open for Snoop Dogg in McAlister Auditorium at Tulane. Just a week and a half later on April 1st, his newest mixtape entitled The Outsider will drop.

G's manager Matt just sent art/official a leak from the new mixtape. G features an amazing sample from the Phenomenal Handclap Band in the track that is truly very hypnotizing set against his lyrics. [new] The Generationals: Ten-Twenty-Ten

Wow did we have an unreal showcase last night! Unfortunately Toro Y Moi had to cancel last minute due to illness, but nonetheless the show was nuts! Sun Airway, Cloud Nothings, Cults, and Small Black each brought a very unique sound to truly impress all in attendance at the Saturn Bar. Das Racist even came to show their support and dance a bit! We will have much more coverage on this, and everything Foburg in the coming few days. So check back!

For now we have something special for your ears! New Orleans's very own, The Generationals, have released a new track while on their way to South by Southwest. The song is called "Ten-Twenty-Ten." Once again they deliver a solid summery, indie-pop dance tune. I'll be listening to this all day. The best part... it's a FREE DOWNLOAD! Enjoy.

The Muppets cover LCD Soundsytem in Brighton

The Muppets where in Brighton, England this past weekend enjoying the beach a quick hour train ride outside of London. Somehow while cruising the town they managed to get all their musical equipment on top of a store, set it all up, and play an unreal cover of LCD Soundsystem's Dance Yrself Clean to those passing by below. With Kermit on vocals (taking the place of James Murphy), Cookie Monster on keys, and Ms. Piggy as backup dancer/groupie, they really put on a show! One of their band members got hammered on the beach during the set on my favorite cheap beer in England, Kronenbourg, and passed out. That evening while one of the band members played a DJ set in a club on the beach, Kermit and Ms. Piggy hook up on the beach in what I imagine led to a lovely hand whammy for Kermit. I never knew The Muppets were such rock stars until this day. This is simply amazing. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I do.

My Graveyard Jaw!

My Graveyard Jaw AKA Stix Duh Clown (from his life in the circus) has been a favorite local act of mine since I moved to the city in 2007. His sound is dark, at times somber, but with more heart and soul than I have heard in a very long time. When I began seeing Stix he would sit behind a suite case hitting it with a drum kick usually used for a bass drum. On his other foot he strapped a tambourine. This same act still exists, but now he goes by his real name, "Michael James and his Lonesome."

His new outfit is a bit different. Stix is still on guitar and vocals, but members of New Orlean's legends The Zydepunks back him up. The sound is a bit more full and accessible. I personally still have a soft spot for his one man shows I saw when I first moved to New Orleans, but none the less My Graveyard Jaw with a full band is something to see!

So Stix is trying to press his newest record onto vinyl and needs our help. He needs to raise $1,500 in the next month and a half or so. On this site, if you like what you hear, you can commit a donation of any size which will only be taken from your account if the goal of the $1,500 is met.

Stickers on the way!

Great news! ART/OFFICIAL is about to have a makeover. In the next two months or so you will see drastic changes in the website to give us that professional but like to party look. I would proudly like to display our new logo. I have uploaded it as the sticker form that is on the way to us now to put all over town, your laptops, etc. Below that is our second sticker for those who request one. It will be printed to look like a Polaroid photo, and thus can be written on in the white part on the bottom. I hope you like them!!

All of us at art/official suddenly have found ourselves single. Maybe its the time of year? Maybe our dashing good looks have begun to wear off? We were attempting to put together a video of ourselves talking about what we are looking for in a woman, but then I found this. It just hits the nail on the head too well not to use it. Personally I can relate with this guy.

If you don't know about Nicolas Jaar... you should.

Nicolas Jaar is only 21 years old, but he's already had quite the life. Much of his childhood was spent in Chile, but his formative years were spent in NY, where he entered the world of electronic music and released his first record before he completed high school, on the renowned Wolf + Lamb label no less. These days, he's actually pursuing a college degree at Brown, but he still finds the time to DJ around the globe, produce, and run his own imprint, Clown and Sunset. Next week, Jaar will be releasing his full-length debut, Space Is Only Noise, so we figured it would be a fine time to enlist him for the XLR8R podcast series. His exclusive mix does not disappoint, as it's heavy on his own pensive, jazz- and soul-tinged productions, including several unreleased songs and remixes. Jaar is ostensibly a house artist, but this mix explores different moods, tempos, styles, and eras; it even manages to squeeze in tracks from Bob Dylan and Pharoah Sanders without losing the plot. We imagine that we'll be hearing lots more from Jaar in the years to come, but the man already appears to be operating at the top of his game.

These are both incredible. Jamie Welch aka Seams, recorded his most recent EP "Tourists" while working and living in Berlin. Beyond that I know little information about this new producer. I got this bit of info from fellow music blog "hot cakes."

• It was inspired by the outdoor living of the city in the summer, and how much music was intrinsically linked to daily life. I spent much of my time in Berlin recording the sounds of the city with a tape recorder and my phone, and based each track on these recordings, attempting to recreate the feeling of being there.

While I'm not the first to say it, his sound reminds me a lot of Four Tet and Pantha Du Prince. Make sure to play them on a good sound system (naturally). Have a lovely lovely day.

The Social Service brings free, fresh beats from likes of Samiyam, Dibia$e and others

At this point in the game it’s pretty easy to sound cool when someone mentions experimental hip-hop or the beat scene. Practically anyone can namedrop 4 or 5 artists off of Brainfeeder and make a joke about the Gaslamp Killer’s mustache, but The Social Service is staying one step ahead—showcasing the genre’s experimental hip-hop roots and demonstrating once again that they know what the fuck is up.

Samiyam is the guy who isn't Flying Lotus

I can’t begin to understand how an experimental hip-hop track is composed, but I do know that I've listened to so much of it that when I drink enough around the right people I sound like a huge retard: “OH SO YOU KNOW THAT WAHBWAHB SOUND ON ZODIAC SHIT? YEAH WELL COMPUTER JAY USED THAT SAME SAMPLE ON EPIPHANY!!” I’m bringing this up because there might be a lot of that kind of talk at this show—it’s a history lesson on the future of electronic music, if that makes any sense.  While each artist has his own style, they have a lot in common; that is, the Adult Swim, weeded-out, lumbering golem beat that’s ever so slightly “off” mixed with moments of classic turntablism and a drums-and-right-hand-only-synth minimalism.

Dibiase

Dibiase (his name seems to carry a random amount of attached dollar signs and “Mr.”s) named himself after an extra-gimmicky professional wrestler from the 80s and laces his beats with video game noises from the era—which is even cooler when you know he’s been doing it for more than a decade, way before the current 8-bit craze.

Computer Jay and Mophono both have a chance to be this show’s Mono/Poly (readers will remember him  as the guy who no one went to see, but was also who this blog thought stole the show), but the titan here is, without question, Samiyam. He’s been collaborating with Flying Lotus—as FLYamSAM for at least three years now, and has also released the amazing track “Eff This,” which was a collaboration with Hudson Mohawke. He has also boosted his resume with releases on the UK's Hyperdub label--which is where Burial and Zomby among others released their tunes.

A Gluten-Free Success

The art/official dance commanders are simply ecstatic after last Friday’s “Gluten-Free Jurassic Hoe-Down.” Though the name was confusing, “What’s gluten?” and “So does that mean there won’t be beer?” were two popular questions, we’ll continue the tradition of using bad inside jokes as catchy names for our parties.

This was our second night of packing The Saturn Bar to the brim with 250 people (or more if any of ya’ll snuck in or forged those mustaches), so we’re really happy to have officially established the only dance party in New Orleans where most people, instead of standing around talking about what music they’d rather be hearing, are actually dancing.

Here at art/official we’ve been to literally thousands of shows and dance parties and never have we seen a crowd so diverse—from Bywater musicians and poets to adventurous college students—unrepentantly, uh, “get loose” with one another. We don’t expect that to change anytime soon.

More James

I know I just posted some James Blake, but since then I have become hooked. His new album is to be released in February, but copies are already floating around. Really only knowing Blake as an electronic producer, on hearing his voice I have been blown away. I couldn't recommend the album enough to those looking for a very fresh sound. The album in it's entirety is an experience to say the least. Here is one more track from the album. I know I may say this often, but this track MUST BE PLAYED LOUD on a system with A LARGE SUB-WOOFER. The feel of the song will not ring through if the sub is missing from the equation. The track has actually been out since October, but I have 0 problem posting it now. So without further ado here is James Blake covering Feist's "Limit to your Love."
