I remember three years ago starting college. Girl Talk came to open for the Disco Biscuits at Tulane. The small auditorium was packed. This week Girl Talk came back to New Orleans to fill the House of Blues for two massive sold out shows in a row. The crowed poured out of the venue sweaty and exhausted. A testament to any fun dance party. Our man on the inside got the evidence.
Guitarist Matthew Mondanile writes and records music for his side project, Ducktails, when he isn't busy with the boys from Real Estate. He has gained a considerable amount of attention for the catchy, lazy tunes he's composed under this moniker, and has already done some pretty interesting collaborative work with other favorite musicians of mine, like Julian Lynch. But ever since I heard that there was going to be a track on his newest album, Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics (out of January 18 via Woodsist), featuring Noah Lennox, a.k.a. Panda Bear of Animal Collective, I've been teeming with excitement.
The track sounds about like I imagined it would; relaxed guitar riffs that make you feel like you're lost on a beach somewhere are sprinkled with driving electronic samples, tambourines, and classic Lennox melodies. The track over all is a bit repetitive and though it seems at times like it should develop into something more substantial, the main vocal catch paints a lovely picture and asks:
"Can't you just sit a while / and try your hardest to smile?"
it ain't no joke that the genre of surf influenced (and often times passive aggressive) punk rock has really taken off over the past few years in the independent music scene with the coming of wildly popular young bands like wavves, no age, and best coast. i have myself become an avid fan and listener of that specific genre over the past year. here are two tracks i've especially enjoyed lately to satisfy all of your loose summer time cravings:
tennis is awesome. we all know this by now. check out this new video for the track pigeon, which is due out on their first full length album later this month, and catch them at the house of blues on march 15!
Pop music has officially entered the 90s. Trans-like piano compositions are sure to dominate this next year of pop music without a doubt. Here is a brand new track from an old favorite of mine Hercules and Love Affair. I must admit I like the songs with Antony Hegarty on vocals the best (his voice is just surreal), but this is still pretty cool!
The song is called "My House." There is a bit shorter version on youtube without this video. The sound quality on it is better, but this video is worth it. Start your day dancing :)
